HOUSTON, Texas – The HBU softball team dropped a doubleheader at the hands of visiting Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on a hot Wednesday afternoon at Husky Field. The scores were 5-1 and 4-0.

The Islanders scored a single run in the top of the first as Larissa Martin singled up the middle, stole second, then scored on a Margo Hurdt single.

That was all the scoring until the top of the sixth, as four Husky errors contributed to three Islander runs. TAMUCC added another run in the seventh. HBU got its lone run in the bottom half of the sixth as Kaitlin Southerland brought home Kali Johnson with a single to third.

HBU was held to just four hits in the opener, two of which came off the bat of Lorin Leatherwood. Martin was the only Islander with a multi-hit game, also going 2-for-3.

Beth Evans took the loss as she only allowed eight hits and one walk in all seven innings, fanning four. Addie Tallman pitched a gem, allowing just four hits and zero earned runs while striking out one. Sixteen of the 27 batters faced were ground balls.

Game two started out similar as the first as TAMUCC got on the board in the top of the third with a single run, but then broke it open with three runs in the seventh.

Casie Campanello broke Tallman’s no-hitter with a single to right-center in the sixth inning; the only hit in the game for HBU.

Jammie Weidert pitched the complete game, allowing 11 hits and one walk while striking out two. Tallman allowed just one hit, while walking zero and whiffing none. Martin was the leading hitter, going 3-for-4 on the game.

HBU (16-21) will complete the 2009 season at the Independent Tournament, hosted by the University of Northern Colorado. The Huskies will play the host Bears at 6 pm CST and Cal State-Bakersfield at 8:30 pm CST, both on Friday. The tournament continues with bracket play on Saturday and Sunday.

After the doubleheader, seniors Leatherwood, Megan Klimitchek and Melissa Wright were honored for their accomplishments at HBU.
