Brittany Barton is a 5-6 combination guard who hails from Frisco Centennial High School where she played for head coach Wesley Charles. Barton was a 2009 McDonald’s All-America nominee, played in the DFW Metro All-Star game and was a First Team All-District selection as a senior. As team captain, she helped her team reach the regional quarter finals while averaging 12.8 points, 3.5 assists, 2.8 steals, 3.5 rebounds and nearly one block per game. Barton also played golf for four years at Centennial and was a member of the National Honor Society.
“One of the first words I can use to describe Brittany (Barton) and her family is class. With that, she is a great shooter. She displays all the intangibles on the court that you can’t coach. I feel she will have a huge role in our success and will pay huge dividends when facing zone defenses,” Buchanan stated.
Princess Jeanmard, out of Alief Taylor High School where she played for head coach Dianna Carey, is a 5-7 point guard. Jeanmard will join the Huskies after a senior year in which she averaged 18.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.4 steals per game for the Lions. She was named All-District three times and was selected to the Great Houston Area Coaches Association All-Star team. Jeanmard holds the Alief Taylor record for points scored in a game (41), assists in a game (11) and three-pointers in a game (7).
“Princess is arguably one of the top prep point guards in the country. She is an incredible signing for us. She brings instant credibility from both a recruiting and playing standpoint. I see her getting substantial minutes from day one. She is a true leader on the floor,” added Buchanan.
Brittany Maxey, a fall signee from Lufkin High School, is a 5-9 combination guard. Maxey averaged 12.7 points, two assists, 2.1 steals and 1.5 blocks per game for head coach Winfred Simmons. She was twice named First Team All-District as well as Academic All-District. Maxey was named the Panthers’ team MVP as a senior. Maxey and Jeanmard played together in AAU ball for former HBU basketball player Chris Johnson.
“Brittany is just, flat out, an athlete. She is very versatile and brings great intensity on both the offensive and defensive ends. She has tremendous size and length from the guard position. She has the skill set to be that ‘go to’ player when we really need a basket,” said Buchanan.
Joselyn Pugh, a 5-10 forward from Plano East High School, will join the Huskies after playing for head coach Doug Bleadorn. A two-time First Team All-District selection, Pugh was named the team MVP as a senior after averaging 11 points, 6.7 rebounds and two steals per game. She was also an All-District Academic honoree for the 2008-09 season.
“Joselyn is a great kid from a great family. She played AAU ball for a great friend of mine, Roosevelt Riley. Her athletic ability is very versatile as she can play and defend inside and outside,” added Buchanan. “She will give us a true offensive threat from the high post as well as having the ability to get to the basket.”
Destini Texada, a 5-11 post player from Alief Elsik High School, averaged a double-double during her senior season with head coach Lashawn Johnson and the Rams. She was the district 19-5A MVP as a senior and joined Jeanmard on the Greater Houston Area Coaches Association All-Star team, where she was named MVP. Texada scored 11.1 points and pulled down 10.4 rebounds as a senior, connecting on 47 percent from the floor.
Buchanan said, “Destini is a phenomenal, athletic, versatile player. She has the whole package, in regard to her skill set. She has the athleticism to be one of the top rebounders in our conference and to defend the post or the perimeter. The biggest compliment I can give her is that her work ethic is second to nobody.”
Buchanan concluded, “We still have a lot of work to do, but for our first true Division I signing class, this gives us a great foundation. One of the things I am most proud of is that these are all local, Texas kids.”
